Chennai is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu and is one of the four metropolitan cities of India. Located on the South Eastern coast of India, it occupies an area of 426 square kilometres. It is the fourth-largest city and the fourth-most populous metropolitan area in India and the 36th-largest urban area in the world. Chennai has been selected as one of the 20 Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi’s flagship Smart Cities Mission.
Chennai Metropolitan Area is currently rated the fourth-largest economy in India, with the third highest GDP per capita. It is also ranked 2nd among the top 21 business destinations in India according to a recent ranking unveiled by the Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management (GIREM).
With it’s diversified economic base anchored by the automobile sector, software services, medical tourism, hardware manufacturing, financial services, petrochemicals, textiles and apparels, Chennai’s key industrial hubs of Sriperumbudur and Oragadam host major MNCs including Hyundai, Ford, Renault Nissan and Daimler among others.
Chennai is India‘s biggest automotive cluster today and is termed ‘The Detroit of Asia’, accounting for 30 percent of automotive manufacturing, 40% of auto components and 60% of the India’s automotive exports and is India’s second largest exporter of IT and IT enabled Services.
